5 Family Photo Spots in the Mankato Area
Fall in Southern Minnesota might just be my favorite time of the year. It’s also my favorite time for family photos! The light gets softer, the leaves turn beautiful shades of red and gold, and everyone swaps summer swimsuits for cozy sweaters that photograph well!
If you’re looking to snap some family photos this season, we have some great local spots around Mankato that never disappoint. Here are some of my favorite places to snap a great family picture or two!
Red Jacket Trail Park
If you’re looking for an easy, scenic spot without much fuss, Red Jacket Trail Park is a great place to start. The paved trail winds through open fields and wooded areas, giving you a nice mix of backdrops depending on the vibe you’re going for.
It’s especially pretty in the fall when the trees along the path start changing color, and the flat, walkable terrain makes it easy with little ones or strollers in tow.
It’s also just a convenient, low-key option if you don’t want to go too far outside of town. Sometimes the best photo spots are the ones that don’t require a ton of planning. With Red Jacket Trail Park, you can just show up, walk a little, and let the fall colors do the work for you.
Sibley Park
It’s easy to see why Sibley Park is a Mankato family favorite! Between the walking bridges, mature trees, and the little zoo tucked inside, there’s no shortage of great backdrops to choose from.
In the fall, the canopy of trees along the walking paths turns into a gorgeous mix of oranges and yellows. It's seriously one of the most photogenic spots in town.
It’s also a great choice if you have kids who need a little something to keep them entertained. Let them run around, see the animals, or play near the river while your photographer snaps some great candid shots.
Hubbard House
If you’re looking for a little more historic charm, Hubbard House is the perfect place for you! This beautifully preserved Victorian home brings a completely different feel to your photos. This spot is full of elegant architecture, manicured grounds, and a bit of old-world character that you just can’t recreate in a park setting.
It’s a wonderful option if you want your family photos to feel a little more timeless or formal. The details around the house, like the porch, brick pathways, or surrounding gardens, all add depth and interest to your pictures. It’s especially beautiful in the fall when the surrounding trees complement the home’s classic look.
Minneopa State Park
If you’re willing to drive just a little further outside of town, Minneopa State Park is absolutely worth it. Between the cascading waterfall and the chance to spot the park’s resident bison herd, it offers some of the most dramatic natural scenery in our area. Fall adds another layer of beauty, with the surrounding bluffs and trees exploring with beautiful colors.
It takes a bit more planning than some of the closer spots on this list, but the payoff is worth it. Just be sure to check trail conditions ahead of time, especially if you’re bringing little ones along for the hike down to the falls.
Henderson Ney Center
For something a little more off the beaten path, consider the Henderson Ney Center. It’s a bit of a drive, but if you’re up for it, the Ney Center offers a quieter, more untouched kind of beauty. It’s a great option if you’re hoping to get away from the more popular photo spots and find something a little more unique for your family’s photos this fall.
As Gretchen herself says, “I haven’t done many family pictures there, but where we live is the Henderson Ney Center. It’s about 30 miles north of Mankato. The nature center is just so beautiful!”
